First responders are on the scene of a plane crash near Falcon Field.

Deputy Chief Forrest Smith of the Mesa Fire Department said two people died in the crash.

Video from Air15 showed a plane had crashed on a road that runs around the perimeter of the airstrip.

Ian Gregor with the Federal Aviation Administration said a single-engine AT-6 crashed on takeoff. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate, Gregor said.

Steve Berry, spokesman for Mesa police, citing preliminary information, said plane took off from the airport and made a right turn when it suffered a "mechanical difficulty" and then crashed onto the roadway.

Upon crashing, the plane caught fire.

A second plane was taking off at the airport "in tandem" with the plane that crashed. It wasn't necessarily known if the two planes were working together or not.

The second plane circled the airport and was able to land safely, he said.

Crews would be working "throughout the night" to clear the roadway and hand the investigation over to the NTSB.
