A man was taken to the hospital after being shot twice in an apparent road-rage incident in Phoenix.

Police were called to a department store around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday in the area of 35th Avenue and Bethany Home Road to investigate a reporting shooting.

A 24-year-old man told police that he was traveling north on 35th Avenue when he got into a "traffic altercation" with another vehicle.

The driver pulled into the department store parking lot when the suspect vehicle, operated by a 36-year-old man, pulled up and the driver began firing gunshots at the 24-year-old.

Police said the victim feared for his life and began firing his gun at the other drive, striking him twice.

The suspect shot back and ran away. Police located the suspect an hour later after friends called 911 requesting medical assistance. The suspect was taken to the hospital and is being treated for a non-life-threatening injury.

Police said evidence at the scene supports the victim's story. The suspect will face charges for aggravated assault.

The names of the suspect or victim were not being released at the time.
