A Valley Uber driver's job is in jeopardy after a deadly accident in Scottsdale last month.

“This started out as, ‘you’ll be on by Christmas. Hopefully, we’ll get you on next week by New Year’s.’ These are the busiest times of the year.' This is one of the reasons I quit because of the money you can make during the holidays.”

David Hollon has been driving for Uber for months. He gave up his career to do it. But on December 19, everything changed.

42-year-old Alicia Maupin was hit by at least four drivers after getting out of her car near the Loop 101 and Hayden Road.

The Department of Public Safety said she may have thought she was parked in the shoulder but she was actually in the far right lane.

Hollon was one of the drivers who hit her. He was driving for Uber at the time.

“David, the gentlemen from Uber, one of his first messages to me was you can report this to your insurance if you want but I wouldn’t because they’re not going to cover anything. There’s a labor law in Arizona on insurance policies that, if you drive your personal vehicle while driving for another company, that insurance becomes null and void.”

Hollon said when he signed up to drive, Uber didn’t tell him that. He said he’s been paying out of pocket for everything since the accident.

“I suffer. I get angry. I get depressed. I cry…no help.”

He said Uber shut down his work account and said they’ve been giving him the run around since.

“My insurance is due,” he said. “My car payment is going to be due. I’ve waited every week to be put back to work.”

You are required to have personal car insurance when you start driving for Uber but as Hollon learned, that policy may exclude coverage when you’re using your car for business.

ABC15 did reach out to Uber but has not yet heard back.

In an email to Hollon, an Uber rep said he is able to make a claim for collision damage but Hollon said they aren’t working with him.
