The Phoenix Police Department is investigating after officers were shot at by an unknown suspect Sunday morning.

Northbound and southbound Interstate 17 between Camelback and Indian School were shut down for three hours as officers investigated in the area.

Police say just after 4 a.m. officers were responding to an unknown trouble call near 27th Avenue and Camelback Road. A caller told 9-1-1 that the suspects were armed with handguns.

As officers arrived in the area, they activated their overhead lights and placed the police spotlight in the direction of a man walking eastbound on West Hazelwood Street.

Police say the man stopped and initially placed his hands up before turning away from the officers, pulling out a handgun and firing a round at the officers as he turned back to them.

The round struck the center part of the patrol vehicle's windshield, police said. The officers exited their patrol car, leaving it in drive, as it rolled and collided with a fence.

The suspect had last been seen running on the North Black Canyon Access Road from West Hazelwood Street.

Police say the suspect was not located after officers set a perimeter and searched the area.

The suspect is described as a 25-year-old Hispanic man, 6 feet tall, weighing between 190 and 200 pounds. He is described as having curly/wavy dark hair and was last seen wearing dark shorts and red bandana around his neck.

If you have any information on this man's identity or this incident you are asked to call Phoenix police or Silent Witness, you can remain anonymous.
