Phoenix police say one person has died and portions of an apartment building were evacuated after a bad crash overnight.

The single-vehicle crash occurred just after 1:30 a.m. near 39th Avenue and McDowell Road.

Police say officers tried to stop the vehicle for a faulty light near 27th Avenue and Thomas Road, but the car would not yield. Officers stopped following the car once the driver fled.

The vehicle was then seen speeding down McDowell Road before it was found wrecked into an apartment complex.

The driver of the car, only described as an adult man, died at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

ABC15 learned a total of eight residents in two units have been displaced due to the car hitting their apartment building.

According to police officers on the scene, more residents could be displaced due to damaged water pipes that feed the apartment building.

McDowell Road is expected to remain closed in both directions through rush hour for the investigation.
