The monsoon storms can be brutal. And some of you may be looking for a contractor to repair a roof or clean-up.

Don't pick that person just because he's knocking at your door. This is the time of year unlicensed contractors troll for work. Some will take your money and not do the job. Or they'll do unnecessary work that doesn't take care of the problem.

Here are some tips to avoid getting scammed:

  1. If a contractor won't give you a license number or wants a large, up-front deposit — AVOID IT.
  2. Do your research. Look up reviews on the person you're considering hiring.
  3. Get three different estimates.
  4. Ask for a license number and then check it at the Arizona Registrar of Contractor's website for complaints.
  5. Demand an invoice and a contract stating prices and what will be done before signing.
  6. Do not pay much until some work is done. Hold some money until the project is finished.
