Police: Witness tracks down, confronts Gilbert hit-and-run driver

A man claiming to be a Union Pacific Railroad Police Officer was tracked down by a witness after his involvement in a hit-and-run collision with a pedestrian.

Gilbert Police report that on July 5, Christopher Shane Jones, 42, was turning into his neighborhood near Warner and McQueen roads when he struck a pedestrian in the crosswalk.

Jones reportedly left the area, followed by a witness who confronted him outside his home.He allegedly admitted to hitting the pedestrian but continued to go into the house and shut the door.

Police talked with Jones who told them he was a police officer with the Union Pacific Railroad. He also allegedly told police that he had not consumed any alcohol or used any drugs. However, police say, his blood alcohol content was recorded at .210.

Police say they found the victim's blood and hair on Jones’s car. Jones reportedly admitted to knowing he hit the victim but said he, "just panicked and left the scene."

The victim suffered a compound leg fracture and a broken shoulder. 

Jones has been charged with aggravated assault DUI and leaving the scene of an injury accident.
