An armed man returns to his home in Avondale just in time to catch a burglar.

Records show a couple returning home around 2 a.m. on October 24 were surprised when they discovered a burglar in their garage.

Police said the husband fired two shots in the suspect’s direction and was able to detain the burglar until officers arrived to the home near Avondale Boulevard and Van Buren Street.

The suspect was later identified as 37-year-old Nicholas Michael Edwards, records show.

According to police, the husband was able to confront Edwards after firing his weapon, the suspect went to his knees and put his hands up. The man ordered him to lie on his stomach until police arrived.

When police spoke with Edwards, he initially said he was looking for his daughter, but later reportedly admitted that he was looking for items to steal to repay a gambling debt.

Police say they found about $1,500 worth of property belonging to the homeowner in Edwards' car.

Edwards has been charged with burglary.
