A stolen $4,000 coin collection posted for sale online has been recovered by police.

Gilbert police report that on June 11, a suspect removed two small safes from a home near Elliot and Cooper roads. Inside the safes was a coin collection worth about $4,000. Several days later, an online ad was posted showing the collection for sale.

The person posting the ad was 31-year-old Erich Michael Walton.

Police served a warrant at his home and found most of the coin collection still there. However, Walton did manage to sell some of the items to unknowing buyers.

Walton, who police say has "multiple pages of criminal history out of several states", allegedly admitted that he "knew or should have known" the coins were stolen.

He reportedly told police that, "he couldn't pass up the opportunity to sell them for a large profit."

Walton, who is on felony release, is being held without bond on several charges of trafficking in stolen property.
