Modern Farmhouse

Farmhouse style is white hot right now! But, what IS farmhouse style? What defines it? How do we get the look? Do you have to live on a farm? Let’s start out by saying that farmhouse style is more of an attitude or a way of life than a style these days. Once farmhouse style was distinguished by 3 key elements… rural location, functional porches and formal and informal living space. Now you can get the modern farmhouse look in almost any space.  Today there are lots of fun decor element that bring the warm, simple and savvy urban farmhouse look to almost any home.

You don’t have to live on a farm but these are some of the key elements to get the look.

1.      Create a cozy front porch with a bench, some pillows and a brightly painted front door.

2.      Add a stainless steel farmhouse sink. It’s the perfect mixture of modern and farm.

3.      Use white kitchen cabinets in a shaker style. It will give you a cottage look with clean modern lines.

4.      Painted planked walls are all the farmhouse rage right now. To add a modern twist, lay them vertically instead of the typical horizontal pattern and use nice wide planks.

5.      Paint your hand-me-down cottage style sideboard in a clean modern color like charcoal grey and maybe even add some chrome or gold knobs or pulls.

6.      Add a barn door to divide a space, but keep the paint clean and modern.

The Modern Farmhouse aesthetic is incredibly popular right now for its bold mix of high contrast elements: black and white, rustic and modern, warm and industrial, pretty yet unfussy. Marked by its tactful combination of rustic pieces and sleek accents, the modern farmhouse look is an incredibly warm, welcoming aesthetic. It is an indicator of tailored, designer taste, but it is also lived-in. It’s not stuffy or off-putting, as overly-embellished or overly-edited rooms can sometimes be.

Because opposites attract, this trend marries a number of design opposites together: new and old, black and white, heavy and light. The style’s popularity is due in part to its appeal to both traditionalists’ and minimalists’ aesthetics, because unlike many other interior styles, the modern farmhouse doesn’t have to be one or the other necessarily.

Goats and chickens need not apply.
