Arizona Governor Doug Ducey met with Arizona Cardinals team president Michael Bidwill, along with Cardinals safeties Tre Boston and Antoine Bethea and defensive tackle Corey Peters, on Tuesday to discuss criminal justice reform in the state.

In a tweet Tuesday night, Ducey said he is "grateful for a productive conversation" with Boston, Bethea and Peters. "We will continue to build on #AZ's efforts to reduce the prison population, offer job training to released offenders & provide a real second chance," Ducey wrote.

In a statement, Daniel Ruiz II, Ducey's senior advisor for communications and policy strategy, said Ducey has "prioritized reforms to reduce the prison population and the rate of recidivism -- focusing on solutions that will help individuals both outside and inside our prison system, including second chance centers to provide job training, substance abuse treatment, and expanding inmate fire-fighting crews.

"But there’s more work to be done, and the governor is grateful to the Cardinals for their interest in continued reforms," Ruiz said in his statement.

A Republican, Ducey is an ASU alum and former Cold Stone Creamery CEO. He served as Arizona's state treasurer before being elected governor in 2014.

Ducey is up for reelection in November. A Gravis Marketing poll conducted Sept. 5-7 showed Ducey up by 4 percentage points over Democratic challenger David Garcia.
