Maricopa County elections officials are planning to begin counting the remaining ballots from this week's primary election and the results should clear up who won the last uncalled congressional race in the state.

The battle to replace retiring Republican Rep. Matt Salmon in the 5th District remains too close to call.

Front-runner Christine Jones leads state Senate President Andy Biggs by fewer than 900 votes. Former Maricopa County Supervisor Don Stapley and state Rep. Justin Olson remain well behind.

The Maricopa County Recorder's Office plans to count votes again Thursday after spending Wednesday preparing tens of thousands of ballots.

The primary winner will almost certainly go on to represent the heavily Republican district spanning Gilbert, Queen Creek and parts of Chandler and Mesa.
