FAA closures: Key dates for 4 Arizona airports facing control tower closures

PHOENIX - Federal aviation officials have released the dates when funding will stop for nearly 150 air traffic control towers nationwide including those at four small Arizona airports.

The Federal Aviation Administration announced Wednesday that federal funding will cease for the control tower at Ryan Field in Tucson on April 7.

Control tower funding will end April 21 at Glendale Municipal Airport and Phoenix Goodyear Airport and on May 5 for at Laughlin/Bullhead International Airport in Bullhead City.

The FAA says the airports will remain open. Pilots will have to coordinate takeoffs and landings via radio and visual contact, as they do at night when the tower isn't open.

Federal budget cuts resulted in the FAA deciding to close 149 control towers operated by contractors at airports with low traffic volumes.
