Attorney General Tom Horne obtains extra $48 million for Arizona AHCCCS

PHOENIX - Arizona will receive an additional $48 million in health care funds as a result of a recent settlement in a tobacco enforcement case, the Office of the Attorney General announced Tuesday.

Attorney General Tom Horne said the extra funds will go to the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System. The extra $48 million is in addition to the current $100 million that Arizona already receives under the settlement to pay health care costs related to tobacco use.

Horne said in a press release that in the worst case scenario, the case could have cost the state up to $1 billion in lost payments.

"Under this settlement, Arizona not only does not lose," Horne said, "but the $48 million that had been held in escrow as part of a claim by the tobacco companies is being released to the state at this time."

Arizona was a leading negotiator in the 20-state settlement.
