A 10-week-old burro is recovering after being attacked by a mountain lion, according to a woman in Surprise who is now raising money for his medical expenses.

Nancy Kohl says a neighbor reached out to her after finding “Lil Abner” and his mother injured. Kohl says she knows this family of wild burros very well because she's an avid horseback rider and is very familiar with the area.

"I just had to help him," Kohl said. "It's not right. He's too little to have something horrible light this."

According to Kohl, Abner and his mother were attacked by a mountain lion and she "bulldozed" it and ultimately saved her baby's life.

Kohl decided to take Abner to Chaparral Veterinary Medical Center in Cave Creek for treatment after seeing his condition.

"He was in rough shape," explained Dr. Rachel Micek, a veterinarian at the center.

Micek said Abner was hobbling around and noticed several wounds appeared to be at least a week-old. He also had a serious infection due to his wounds.

"He had a pretty big open wound between his front legs and one on his right hind leg around his knee, which is the one we are most concerned about," Micek said.

She believes, if Kohl had not brought him in, he would most likely not have survived out in the desert on his own.

The care is costly and Kohl has started raising money for his recovery through a GoFundMe page.

You can also call the center directly at (480) 595-8600 to donate or online through their partnership with American Veterinary Care Charitable Fund. In the line that says "names for recognition" just add "Lil Abner."
