Golf cart seat belts designed to keep drivers safe are now being recalled by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.
The office started installing them for people years ago, at the request of the Sun City West Homeowner's association.
Then, tragedy struck.
Sandra Ayers McClintock, 71, was riding in her golf cart and collided with an SUV going less than 20 miles per hour.
Her golf cart was barely damaged, but she died from blunt force trauma injuries to her abdomen.
"With how low impact this crash was, it is more likely she would have survived if she didn't have the seatbelt on," said Aimee Ayers, Sandra's daughter.
"It was definitely because the seatbelt was too high on her abdomen and it was hitting her mid-stomach area."
Ayers believes MCSO installed the belts incorrectly.
"The most frustrating thing as far as the seatbelts go, if you do one Google search you will find they were not properly installed."
MCSO said it learned of a potential issue concerning the seatbelts in 2017, which prompted an investigation.
The office continues to evaluate and address all areas of concern with a sole focus on public safety and all services by the office.
MCSO is not taking responsibility for Sandra's death, but they started notifying those who had the belt installed back in January.
They are offering to remove them for free at the following events:
May 19, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at MCSO Dist. 3 substation in Surprise
May 26, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Sun City West Posse office
June 2, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Sun City Posse office
"It's just really tragic, and it shouldn't have happened," Ayers said. That's the struggle we have had on a daily basis."
