A man who admitted to killing his wife and son in Goodyear three years ago was released from a state hospital and put in jail on Thursday.
According to official documents, police received a call on April 6, 2013, from Eugene Maraventano who stated he had killed his wife and children.
When police arrived, they found his wife, Janet, and adult son, Bryan, dead inside the home with a 14-inch knife near one of the bodies.
Eugene was also found with dried blood covering his body and self-inflicted wounds.
Maraventano told police he used to work on New York railroads, had frequented prostitutes and thought he had infected his wife with HIV.
He said he was "not a violent person," but decided to kill his wife two weeks before doing so, according to documents. He also said he tried to kill himself various times, but was worried about his adult son who would be alone. He knocked on his son's door and killed him, too.
Investigators found a note addressed to another son, stating that he had murdered the pair.
Maraventano was taken to jail in April 2013, but the case was dismissed because he was found incompetent to stand trial. He was then placed in a state hospital for court-ordered treatment.
On Thursday, Maraventano was released from treatment and taken back to jail by Goodyear police on two charges of first-degree murder.
