Glendale PD: Gregory Johnson electrocuted during apparent copper theft attempt

GLENDALE, AZ - Glendale police said a man found lying next to a transformer at a vacant Glendale business died after suffering extensive burns to his body.

Police spokesman Brent Coombs said 57-year-old Gregory Johnson was electrocuted at an abandoned commercial yard near 51st Avenue and Bethany Home Road.

Coombs said it appears Johnson snuck in through a hole in the fence.

Coombs added evidence suggests Johnson was trying to steal metal, possibly copper wiring, from a transformer.

The transformer still had power to it and ended up giving the man 3rd degree burns to 100% of his body, according to the Glendale Fire Department.

A spokesperson for Salt River Project said more than 1400 customers lost power for about an hour.
