16-year-old girl charged as adult in Glendale sex act death

GLENDALE, AZ - A 16-year-old girl arrested for the death of a 43-year-old man during a sex act will face trial as an adult, according to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.

Glendale police Sgt. Jay O'Neill said Jason Ash, 43, was found lifeless Saturday evening near 63rd and Olive avenues with multiple cuts to his body and a cord around his neck.

Jessica Burlew, who was also in the apartment at the time Ash's body was found, was arrested and booked on second-degree murder charges.

O'Neill said Burlew told authorities the pair was involved in a "consensual sex act involving strangulation," and when things went wrong, the girl called her mother.

The woman called authorities then began to provide life-saving care to Ash, according to O'Neill.

As her mother was attempting to save Ash, Burlew reportedly fled the scene. Ash was pronounced deceased at the scene by paramedics.

During the course of the investigation, the teen was found in a neighboring apartment and was taken into custody without incident.

No charges have been filed against Burlew's mother, said O'Neill, but the investigation is ongoing.

The mother, who did not want to go on camera, told ABC15 Monday evening that her daughter suffers from schizophrenia and autism.

Burlew had previously been reported as missing from a group home in Phoenix.

According to court documents, when police arrived at the scene they found Ash in the teen's bedroom with an electrical cord around his neck.

Razor blades were also found on the bed where Ash was lying.

Burlew's mother said her daughter had told her that she and Ash were playing sex games, and also that the teen had talked about those types of activities in the past.

Apparently, this time Ash did not say the "safety word", according to court documents.

Police said they found cuts that appeared to be made by a razor blade around Ash's face, arms and body. They said the lack of blood at the scene "is consistent with post mortem cutting."

When interviewed by police, Burlew reportedly admitted to killing Ash by "consensual strangulation", and that she began cutting Ash with a razor blade, at first to get a response, then to relieve stress from the situation.

Police reported Burlew's bedroom contained a number of items associated with a "Goth lifestyle."
