El Mirage police search for hit-and-run suspect

EL MIRAGE, AZ - Police continue to search for a suspect who crashed a car into a bicyclist and dragged her before fleeing the scene in El Mirage last month.

El Mirage police said the hit-and-run collision happened around 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 19 at the intersection of Dysart Road and Soledad Street.

Officers found Raquel Johnson seriously injured after she was struck by a vehicle while riding her bicycle, according to El Mirage police Sgt. Annita Boynton.

The suspect vehicle dragged Johnson and her bicycle for about 100 feet before fleeing the scene, Boynton said.

Johnson said she tried to get the driver's attention by banging on the front grill. "I don't know how the rest of my body was, but I know I was trying to get him to stop."

But the driver didn't stop. Johnson was shocked after the vehicle took off. She said, "How could you not care that you just hurt somebody and then he just left me on the road. I'm not a thing, I am a person."

The suspect was driving a gray or dark colored SUV type vehicle, Boynton said. No other description is available at this time.

It was last seen driving onto Soledad Street into a neighborhood.

Johnson spent two weeks in the hospital recovering from her injuries. She lost the tip of one finger on her left hand. She'll need to go through rehabilitation for that hand. She also received skin grafts on her right shoulder and thigh.
