Tempe officer-involved shooting: Officer shoots man after being hit by glass bottle

TEMPE, AZ - A Tempe police officer is on administrative leave after shooting a suspect who attacked him with a wine bottle Monday morning.

Tempe police Sgt. Mike Pooley said the officer was responding to a disturbance call near the intersection of Forest Avenue and 7th Street shortly before 4 a.m. Monday when the attack happened.

A 911 caller indicated that the individual was "going crazy" and throwing bottles and destroying signs, said police.

Pooley said the suspect was vandalizing the House of Tricks restaurant when the officer confronted him.

When the officer approached, police said the suspect threw a wine bottle at the officer, hitting him in the head. The officer then shot at the suspect, hitting him in the hand.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The officer received medical attention at the scene but did not need to be taken to the hospital.

Authorities said the suspect assaulted a firefighter and a nurse on the way to the hospital. Drugs and alcohol may be a factor.

Tempe police are investigating the shooting.

Police said the suspect will most likely be charged with assaulting a law enforcement officer.
