Car explodes outside QuikTrip in Tempe, possibly drug related

TEMPE, AZ - Police are investigating after a vehicle explosion Wednesday at a QuikTrip in Tempe.

According to Tempe police, officers responded to a vehicle fire outside the QT gas station on Priest Drive and US 60 around 9:45 p.m.

QT employees and others at the scene tried to put out the fire before officials arrived. During that time, the driver fled the scene and is still on the loose.

When officials arrived they found the vehicle in the parking lot of an apartment complex next to the QT.

Residents around the vehicle were evacuated as a precaution. Authorities eventually determined the SUV did not contain explosives.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and the incident may be drug-related.

No injuries were reported.
