Woman in custody after toddler reportedly abused at Cholla Montessori Preschool in Mesa

MESA, AZ - A 21-year-old woman is in custody Friday morning on suspicion of child abuse and unlawful imprisonment.

Lauren Miller was taken into custody after a 2-year-old girl was reportedly abused at a Mesa preschool.

Detective Steve Berry said the incident happened at the Cholla Montessori Preschool near Gilbert Road and University Drive.

Berry said when police arrived at the facility Thursday they found the young girl restrained in a sleeping area of the daycare.

Authorities said no medical attention was necessary and she is now in the care of her parents.

Tommy Latog's 3-year-old son goes to Cholla Montessori and he has two older children who also went there.

He couldn't believe what he heard when police called him to pick up his son.

"It's pretty disturbing to find something like that in a facility where parents or adults certainly bring their children to be in a safe environment," said Latog.

Berry said employees at the preschool were interviewed and an adult female suspect was located and identified.

Berry said the Department of Health Services has been notified of the situation.

The investigation is ongoing at this time.
