Mesa police officer shoots woman with gun

MESA, AZ - A Mesa woman was shot and wounded by police Wednesday after she allegedly pointed a gun at a police officer in a Mesa retirement community.

Mesa police spokesman Steve Berry said the shooting happened around 1:45 p.m. near University Drive and Recker Road in East Mesa.

Berry said the officer was serving a warrant on the woman charging her with driving under the influence.

The officer talked to the woman in the driveway of her home at Dream Land Villa retirement community.

Police said the officer and woman walked into the home together and she somehow was able to get a gun.

The woman and officer ended up in the backyard of the home, where police said she raised the gun toward the officer and he feared for his safety.

Authorities said the officer shot the woman and she was taken to a hospital for treatment. Her name hasn't been released.
