An 8-year-old girl returns home after she was abducted Sunday afternoon.
MESA, AZ - A man is in custody after he allegedly abducted a young girl riding her bicycle in Mesa Sunday afternoon.
Mesa police Sgt. Tony Landato said that around 1 p.m. the 8-year-old girl was riding her bike around her apartment complex near Broadway and Dobson roads when she was grabbed by the 22-year-old male.
Landato said 22-year-old Robert Curtis Milliron left with the child in a silver passenger car.
Milliron crashed his vehicle in a neighborhood alley near where he abducted the girl, Landato said.
The child was able to get away and run into the arms of arriving officers as the suspect fled on foot, according to Landato.
Landato said a perimeter was set up and Milliron was taken into custody about 45 minutes later.
Milliron admitted to the abduction to officials, Landato said.
The 22-year-old man told police he was lonely and looking for a companion.
Landato said some neighbors who saw the girl being abducted ran up to an officer who happened to be in the area. He credits their quick action with getting to the girl and the suspect so quickly.
Residents of the complex are now on edge. Lester Hernandez lives at the apartment complex with his sister's children.
"It's really sad because now kids are going to have to stay inside, not going out to play with their friends or have fun," Hernandez said.
