PD: Man throws bike at off-duty deputy, accused of shoplifting

MESA, AZ - Mesa police have taken a man into custody after he allegedly threw a bike at an off-duty deputy.

According to Mesa police, the man was suspected of shoplifting at the Mesa Riverview Walmart around 5:00 a.m. on Thursday. When an off-duty deputy approached the man, the suspect threw his bike at him.

Police say the deputy tried to stop the suspect, but he ran away.

The suspect hopped over several backyards in the area, police said. Officials took the man into custody at 5:30 a.m. He will be charged with aggravated assault on an officer, shoplifting and trespassing.

The deputy involved in the confrontation reported an injury to his knee.
