Mesa PD: Carlos Hillan planned to set wife on fire, kill boyfriend

MESA, AZ - Mesa police arrested a man who planned to set his estranged wife on fire, kill her boyfriend and then commit suicide, according to a police report.

According to Mesa police, 34-year-old Carlos Hillan was making plans to kill his wife, but a family acquaintance fortunately became aware of the situation and called police.

Hillan was arrested Wednesday afternoon at his estranged wife's home as he was waiting for her to return from work, Berry said.

He was reportedly caught jumping the back wall of his wife's house with a gas can and lighter.

Initially, Mesa police said in an email to ABC15 that Hillan planned to kill his wife and 3-year-old daughter.

A police report obtained by ABC15 later revealed that Hillan actually wanted to kill his wife and her boyfriend.

The police report said Hillan told a family acquaintance to take care of his daughter because he was going to kill his estranged wife, her boyfriend and himself.

Hillan reportedly told the family acqaintance that he was going to kill his wife's boyfriend with a machete and showed her the machete in the trunk of his car.

The police report said he also showed her a gas can, rope, handcuffs, zip ties and a machete in the car.

Hillan and his wife have been separated for about a month, according to the police report.

In an interview with police, Hillan said he first had thoughts of killing them when he drove by the house and saw the boyfriend's car parked at the home, the police report said.

He was homeless, living in his car and depressed at the time, the report said.
