Mary O'Sullivan Schultz was 70 years old and a wanderer.
Schultz loved to walk even before Alzheimer's began to affect her memory. She wandered from the grounds of her memory care facility in Mesa nearly two weeks ago.
Schultz's body was found on Saturday on a farm-type property just a half-mile away. Mary's son Dan Schultz said he believes surveillance video from Copper Village, the facility where she lived, will show them what went wrong.
"Unfortunately they (Copper Village) aren't willing to share that with us. They shared it with Mesa Police. It is our understanding it shows an employee or contractor of the facility allowing her to leave," Dan Schultz said.
Dan said the only way Mary could've left is if someone punched in the code and opened the gate for her. When Copper Village didn't respond to our emails, we went there to find out what happened.
Facility employees would only say their hearts are with Schultz's family.
"If someone did their job right, she'd be alive," Dan Schultz said. "Somebody didn't do their job."
According to Dan, Mary was last seen at 2:00 a.m on June 28. Police were called at 3:30 am. Dan was called at around 5:00 a.m. He says he believes precious minutes were lost.
"So we entrusted a facility that was supposed to look after her. But unfortunately, she was found ten days later, face down, in a field," Dan said.
When asked about legal action, Dan said they have not retained an attorney, but haven't ruled it out.
