The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office says it has arrested one of its deputies for taking money while responding to a report of a dead body.

In a news release sent Tuesday night, the sheriff's office said 29-year-old Gregory Johnson responded to a report of a dead body near Mesa on October 28.

While investigating the death, detectives learned Johnson may have taken money from the deceased. That information was turned over to the department's professional standards unit, which reviewed body camera video and interviewed Johnson.

During the interview, MCSO says Johnson admitted to taking the money. An exact amount was not disclosed.

According to court paperwork, at one point during Johnson's body camera footage, a stack of bills could be seen on the victim's dresser. He's reportedly seen leaving the room, then returning near the dresser and could be heard in the footage apparently counting the money.

Johnson will be charged with burglary and theft, with additional charges possible should investigators uncover more evidence of illegal activity.

The department has also started the administrative process to fire Johnson, according to the release.
