Fire burns Mesa 3-plex, parakeet saved

MESA, AZ - Officials say a parakeet was saved after a fire broke out at a tri-plex in Mesa Wednesday morning.

The fire started in one of the single story units near Stapley Drive and Broadway Road around 9:30 a.m.

Mesa Fire Department spokesman Forrest Smith said there were no injuries and four people have been displaced from their homes.

Smith said the fire apparently started on the patio of one of the units and extended from the exterior into the attic of the building.

It took approximately 30 firefighters from Mesa, Tempe and Gilbert to contain the blaze. It was controlled in about 25 minutes, Smith said.

The exact cause of the fire is under investigation.
