Gilbert bike shop surprises Valley family with random act of kindness

GILBERT, AZ - A Valley family's road trip was nearly ruined after thieves got away with all five of their bikes, but a Gilbert business took action to help get them back on the road.

"We're a big bike ride enthusiastic family," said Stephanie Jarnagan.

That enthusiasm for fun turned to shock during the Chandler family's final night during a recent two-week road trip while they were in Texas.

"Came out and the whole bike rack had been removed from the back of our jeep," said Jarnagan.

The rack and all five bikes, stolen within minutes while at a gas station in Van Horn, Texas just weeks before the kids were set to start school.

"Ironically, my husband was going in there to look also for a bike lock," Jarnagan said.

Replacing five bikes at once is not cheap, so Jarnagan turned to Facebook hoping to find help buying used bikes at a decent price. That is when a local bike shop stepped in.

"It was just one of those things honestly we could relate, we'd just gotten back from vacation," said Ashleigh Morris, who owns Freeride Bike Co. in Gilbert with her husband, Brian. The couple didn't think twice about gifting those bikes when they saw Jarnagan's post.

"There's always an opportunity to give, even if it's something on Facebook, it's all starting somewhere," said Morris.

"Acts of kindness are a big thing that we're constantly teaching our kids about, so to see it in action and be on the receiving end of an act of kindness is pretty special," said Jarnagan.
