Suspect involved in Phoenix carjacking, police chase identified

PHOENIX - Phoenix police have identified the suspect who was involved in a high speed chase up and down the I-17 Tuesday night.

Phoenix police spokesman James Holmes said 37-year-old Aaron Jacob Dias is facing several charges including armed robbery and endangerment.

Holmes said the incident started when Dias tried to forge a check at a check cashing business near 19th Avenue and Bell Road.

When police arrived on scene, Dias attempted to carjack a truck with a woman and her two young children inside.

Authorities said officers saw Dias point a gun at the woman. That is when police opened fire on him.

Police were able to get the woman and her children out of the truck, which is when Dias got in the vehicle and took off.

Holmes said Dias drove up and down I-17 before ending up at a Circle K at 19th Avenue and Cactus Road.

Authorities said Dias tried to run over several people in the parking lot before he ran the stolen truck into the side of the store.

Police surrounded the truck and immediately took the man into custody.

Holmes said he does not believe Dias fired any shots at police. No officers or witnesses were injured during the incident.
