Officials say a hit-and-run driver hit a pedestrian in north Phoenix Wednesday before taking off from the crash scene.

Police responded to the area of 35th and Dunlap avenues around 10 p.m., after receiving reports of a 51-year-old man who was struck by a white, newer model pickup truck heading westbound on Dunlap Avenue.

Police believe the pedestrian was crossing mid-block when he was hit by the truck.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, it was discovered that the man suffered a head injury and the truck left the scene after the collision.

The man was taken to a local trauma center for treatment. He is in critical condition and authorities have not released his name.

In a recently released study by the Governors Highway Safety Association, Arizona ranked number one for pedestrian fatalities per 100,000 residents.
