Phoenix police say an armed carjacker was taken into custody after crashing into a car on Sunday morning.

Robert Allen Gabbert, 27, faces several charges in connection with the incident.

According to police, around 7:30 a.m. officers responded to a report of a shooting near 12th Street and Grovers Avenue where they located a man suffering from a gunshot wound.

Police say the victim was with a woman in the area when they were approached by Gabbert, who is known to both of them.

Gabbert reportedly tried to rob both of money and drugs and fired several shots and shot the man before leaving the area. The victim was taken to a hospital after suffering non-life-threatening injuries.

As an officer was searching for Gabbert, they saw two men arguing near 2nd Street and Bell Road.

Before the officer arrived on the scene, police say Gabbert took off in a vehicle. The man who Gabbert was arguing with told officers that Gabbert stole his car at gunpoint.

Gabbert then crashed into another driver at Central Avenue and Bell Road, according to police.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the crash suffered minor injuries in the incident.

Police say Gabbert was arrested at the scene of the collision and the gun he used was recovered from the vehicle he stole.

He is expected to be booked for several counts of armed robbery, theft of a motor vehicle, aggravated assault, and firing a gun within city limits.

According to police, Gabbert had recently been released from jail after being arrested on Thursday for drug-related charges.
