Veterans Day 2013: Phoenix parade details, road closures

PHOENIX - This year's theme is "Saluting America's Veterans." The event will kick-off with a flyover by WWII Biplanes in the air and a large Heroes Flag carried by 30 volunteers on the ground, said Paula Pedene, with Honoring Arizona's Veterans.

Nearly a dozen bands are sprinkled throughout the parade with 10 floats, military vehicles, Color Guards, ROTC units, canine units and more. In total there are 86 entries in the parade, Pedene said.

The parade's Grand Marshals include several veterans with service ranging from World War II to Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Other parade dignitaries include Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick, Secretary of State Ken Bennett, Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton and Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery.

The parade begins at 11 a.m. and starts at the North Phoenix Baptist Church on Central Avenue and ends at approximately 2 p.m. at Indian School Road and Central.

Road closures include:

·Central Avenue: Closure from Missouri Street to Mariposa Street; limited to local access at Indian School Road for northbound traffic up to Mariposa Street.

·Camelback Road:  Closure from Central Avenue to 8th Place; limited to local access at 12th Street for westbound traffic up to 8th Street.

·Missouri Street: Closure from 3rd Avenue to 4th Street; limited to local access at 7th Avenue for eastbound traffic up to 1st Avenue; limited to local access at 7th Street for westbound traffic to 1st Street.

·7th Street:  Closure from Indian School Road to Pasadena Avenue; limited to local access at Bethany Home Road for Southbound traffic up to 300 ft. North of Camelback Rd. (starting at 10 a.m. closure from Indian School to Osborn Rd.)

· Highland Avenue: Limited to local access at 12th Street for westbound traffic to 8th Street.

·Indian School Road: Stating at 10 p.m. closure from 9th Street to 3rd Street
