Metro Phoenix's rail system is adding a new safety feature to help the visually impaired.
Horizontal belts will act as barriers between train cars to help keep riders from mistaking spaces between cars as entries and falling onto the tracks at stations with train-level platforms.
Spokeswoman Susan Tierney says the system hasn't had any incidents but considers the barriers a good safety practice that involves minimal cost.
A Federal Transit Administration notice to light trail systems said between-car barriers are required under regulations implementing the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
Tierney says installation should be completed in October.
Training was required for train crews and maintainers because the belts need to be unhooked and refastened when cars are separated or joined to form trains.
