A San Diego woman visiting Arizona is still in the state after searching for her beloved companion, Mako, for more than two months.
Kelly De Jesus says her parents live in the Navajo Reservation bordering Utah and believes someone stole her dog. She said her mother had a medical emergency, Mako got lost among the crowd when EMS arrived, and then was nowhere to be seen.
"We posted posters, flyers, we went to all of the local vets and humane societies," said De Jesus, but so far, no information on her dog.
Mako has an important role in her family's life. De Jesus and her husband, now deployed overseas serving in the Marines, suffer from anxiety after losing their first-born daughter only nine days after she was born.
De Jesus says Mako sits with her and can sense when she's feeling stressed or upset and works to calm her.
De Jesus believes the lack of resources on the reservation is making her search more difficult with few vets and shelters in the area there aren't many places for her dog to go. Her posters have also been vandalized.
"He's like my son," De Jesus said. "We don't know if we will ever see him again, but we pray every day that we will."
De Jesus is asking everyone to spread the word and hopes whoever has her dog, or anyone that finds him will take him to the nearest vet to check his microchip.
