Police have arrested a man accused of driving the wrong way while under the influence in Phoenix on Wednesday morning.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, officers responded to State Route 51 and Greenway Road for a report of a wrong-way driver just before 3 a.m.

Witnesses had reported seeing the vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound HOV lanes.

Officers then located the vehicle stopped on the shoulder next to the HOV lane, being driven by 53-year-old Richard Stuverud.

Police say during the conversation with officers, Stuverud displayed symptoms of intoxication.

He was then taken into custody and booked for extreme DUI.

Police say there were no other occupants in the vehicle and no collisions were reported.
