It's a big week for Betty Grenig. She just turned 97 years old and is the oldest volunteer with the Red Cross, not just here in the Valley but the entire country.

Grenig started volunteering in 1938 after her mother suggested she join in helping the organization. She started by knitting socks. She has also worked in Red Cross clinics, several hospitals, and organized blood drives across the U.S.

Now 80 years later, she is still coming into the Phoenix chapter once a week to get the job done.

"If something needs to be done and you can do it, whether you feel like it or not, do it," said Grenig.

Betty is known for baking some great cakes. She even brings in her homemade specialties to the Red Cross office once a month.

On Thursday, it was her turn to get a cake. Her friends at the Phoenix chapter brought in a special birthday cake for Betty to celebrate one special volunteer.
