Phoenix officials are advising the City Council to deny a resident's petition for Arizona's most populous city to adopt so-called "sanctuary" policies to shield immigrants and have come under fire from President Donald Trump.

The council is scheduled to consider the petition during a meeting Wednesday.

A memo by City Attorney Brad Holm says the petition's request for Phoenix to declare itself a sanctuary city is vague and wouldn't help city employees perform their duties.

Holm also says the petition's request to stop Phoenix police officers from helping enforce federal immigration laws amounts to asking the city and its employees to violate a requirement set by an Arizona law targeting illegal immigration.

Trump has threatened to withdraw federal funding from sanctuary cities.
