Ten "fragmented" labs at Phoenix Children's Hospital have moved to a single, brand-new facility that the hospital says will lead to faster turnaround times and recovery.

"It's all geared toward improving efficiency," said Dr. Daphne Demello, Medical Director of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.

Around 100 doctors and scientists work in the lab, conducting more than 1.3 million tests a year. The new lab features a conveyor-belt system that can receive specimens from every floor of the hospital, partially automated equipment that can reduce test-turnaround times by hours and a real-time, live camera system of scientists in the lab with surgeons at work.

"They don't need to come out of the [operating room]," Demello said.

The hospital said with a growing number of patients, the facility is future-proof with 2,000 square feet of space to expand.

"For sick kids, you want to know as soon as possible what's wrong and that something's being done to treat them."
