A Phoenix woman is stepping in to help get an abused poodle recovered after the 8-year-old dog was brutally beaten.

Sherri Boom is now taking care of the dog, named Fluffy. She said her sister was walking near Central Avenue and Dobbins Road when she came across a man hitting the dog last week.

"Basically, he had his head like this, just smashing his face into the ground,” Boom said.

Boom said her sister intervened and asked the man whether he would give her the dog. He had been rambling about calling animal services to take the dog, and he seemed to be under the influence of something, Boom said.

Boom said the man gave up the dog, and Boom’s sister gave it to her since she’s a dog lover and has rescued dogs in the past.

It was Boom who called Silent Witness then took the dog to the vet to get it treated.

“They went in and removed the remaining teeth, removed his jaw bone on his right side, and, basically, sewed him up, pieced him back together,” Boom said.

Boom has spent about $3,500 out of pocket and will still be taking Fluffy for follow-up visits.

Now, as she waits to hear back from Silent Witness, she’s trying to raise money through a donation page to get Fluffy recovered.

"It's what I do. I rescue them and try to place them and give them forever homes,” Boom said.

ABC15 News also contacted Silent Witness and is waiting to hear back.
