Maricopa County sheriff's posse trains to defend Phoenix-area schools against gunmen

PHOENIX - Sheriff Joe Arpaio is determined to implement his school protection plan throughout Maricopa County, and that plan requires intense training.

Twenty posse members participated in a number of scenarios at the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office training center on Saturday. Posse members were trained on school shooting scenarios using guns with rubber bullets in a cafeteria setting, in hallways, and outside.

Arpaio's goal is to have 1,000 more volunteers sign up to become a posse member in order to fulfill the people needed for the school protection program.

"I want to build the posse up. They have to make a decision at the end of the school year and this program is important to keep our children safe," Arpaio said.

Action actor Steven Seagal was supposed to be at Saturday's training event but had to cancel at the last minute to tend to an important matter.

He said in a statement that the posse remains one of his passions.

Seagal came to Arpaio's first school posse training session at the beginning of the year and plans on attending more in the future.
