For parents and students caught up in the stress of a new school year, relaxation could be just an app away.

Search for the word "meditation" in the app store, and there are plenty of programs promising to help you find that inner peace.

ABC15 sat down with a local expert to see how these types of exercises are helping users in and out of the classroom.

"I had really bad test anxiety," said Tara Flis.

Flis graduated from ASU almost a decade ago, but she will never forget the stress she battled in school.

"I would get very nervous beforehand," Flis said.

She turned to meditation and said the relief was almost instant.

"Doing the different meditations right before a test, it just helped calm me down and helped me with some mental clarity," Flis said.

Marlise Karlin is the Founder and CEO of SOS Method.

"The stress level is unbelievable and how quickly it disappears from your life," said Karlin. "It goes into the mind and in your brain and how you can rewire your mind with more positive habits."

Karlin's program and app are one of several on the market. She says hers is designed to help even the busiest of minds focus in as little as five minutes a day.

Karlin also says that act of re-wiring the brain can unleash loads of potential for even the youngest of users.

"Suddenly they find they have more courage and they sign up for the school play and they start dealing with relationships and difficulties with teachers and stress in different ways," Karlin said.

"My overall happiness totally shifted from feeling that I was locked into certain situations, or a certain job, to where now I have the freedom and the choice to do what I want to do," said Flis.
