AIA postpones wrestling tournament because of 'skin infection'

PHOENIX - The Arizona Interscholastic Association announced Friday the AIA Sectional Wrestling Tournament has been postponed because a number of wrestlers have contracted an unidentified skin infection.

According to a press release, AIA officials said the tournament, scheduled for Saturday, February 8, is being delayed as a precautionary measure only, saying that none of the people infected have reported having MRSA.

Officials said a new tournament date has not been scheduled yet, but when competition resumes, any athlete with a suspicious skin lesion will not be allowed to compete. In addition, all of the wrestling mats will be disinfected between matches.

AIA officials said they are encouraging any students that have a suspicious skin lesion to go to the doctor and seek treatment before exposing themselves to other people.

The Association said they will release a new tournament schedule next week.
