Holidays and heavy traffic often go hand in hand, but there are ways to avoid the backups during your Thanksgiving trek.

While there is no way to exactly predict your travel forecast, there are certain trends that ADOT sees every year.

For drivers taking S.R. 87 northbound and I-17 northbound, ADOT recommends that you leave for your trip by 1 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon. For drivers on I-10 towards California or Tucson, and U.S. 93 to Las Vegas, try to be on the highways by 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

ADOT is also calling off construction for the holiday weekend, but you could still run into road blocks.

“There will always be some existing work zones that may take a lane away in some areas,” says ADOT spokesman Doug Nintzel.  “But we've already wrapped up some pretty big construction projects in town.”

The new, wider Loop 101 in Scottsdale, and resurfaced I-10 near the Loop 303 will help handle the holiday rush.
