Family of fallen firefighter Andrew Ashcraft launches petition for benefits

PRESCOTT, AZ - The father of a hotshot firefighter killed in the Yarnell Hill Fire launched a petition in an attempt to persuade the city of Prescott to grant his son's family the benefits extended to the other victims' families.

Tom Ashcraft, the father of Andrew Ashcraft, said his son earned health and lifetime benefits currently being denied to his wife and children by Prescott, according to officials at

The city told Andrew's widow Juliann that her husband was a seasonal employee and therefore, not entitled to lifetime salaries and health benefits.

The mother of four children said Andrew was working full-time hours and being paid as a full-time employee at the time of his death on June 30.

"As shocked as I was that my husband went to work and never came home, I'm equally shocked in how the city has treated our family since then," Julian said in the report.

Tom hopes the petition will persuade the city to extend the benefits to his son's family and provide a secure future for his wife and young children.
