Suspect in Gilbert lockdown arrested in Tempe, police say

TEMPE, AZ - Authorities arrested a man Tuesday after he barricaded himself inside his car outside a Tempe shopping center, nearly 24 hours after police began searching for him.

Sgt. Jesse Sanger, spokesman for the Gilbert Police Department, said Matthew Henninger, 47, was arrested by police at the Food City shopping center near Scottsdale and McKellips.

Police said Henninger barricaded himself inside his van, which resulted in the SWAT team being called out.

Gilbert police began searching for Henninger Monday afternoon in connection to a reported domestic violence situation.

Authorities were searching for the suspect near Higley Road and Southern Avenue for hours on Monday. Air15 video showed several SWAT and police officers searching a nearby apartment complex.

The search forced the lockdown of San Tan Montessori school Monday afternoon. Students were not in danger nor was any threat made against the school, said police.

Sanger said Tuesday that Henninger faces multiple felony charges, including aggravated assault.

Details related to the alleged domestic violence situation were not released.
