I-10 crash near Picacho Peak update: Lenny Lubers, David Bechtel identified as victims

PICACHO, AZ - Authorities have identified two other people killed in the Interstate 10 pileup Tuesday north of Picacho Peak that involved 19 vehicles.

Dust and high winds caused zero visibility shortly after 12 p.m., which led to the pileup on westbound Interstate 10 at milepost 214.

The victims were identified as 46-year-old Lenny Lubers of Phoenix and 51-year-old David D. Bechtel of Milton, Iowa.

The third person killed was identified Tuesday as 76-year-old Gordon Lee Smith of Mead, Washington.

A total of 12 people were hurt, ranging from minor to life-threatening injuries, according to DPS.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety said 11 vehicles involved were large commercial vehicles.

Another two-vehicle crash happened in the eastbound lanes, involving minor injuries, said DPS.

Interstate 10 was closed in the area from around noon to 11 p.m.
