Nairobi mall shooting: US calls Kenya attack 'despicable,' provides help

WASHINGTON - The U.S. State Department is condemning what it calls a "despicable massacre" at a shopping mall in Kenya's capital Saturday.

State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf says the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi is closely monitoring the situation, and U.S. law enforcement, military and civilian personnel in Nairobi are providing advice and assistance to the Kenyan authorities.

She says five Americans were among the scores of people injured in the attack by Islamic extremists on the upscale Westgate Mall in Nairobi. She says the U.S. has no reports of any American deaths, although the wife of a Foreign Service employee working for the U.S. Agency for International Development was killed.

Harf says the U.S. stands ready "to assist Kenya in finding those who did this and in holding them accountable."
